It’s the audacity to exist, fully ornamented and fully real, in a world that wants you either invisible or in a museum.

She sees the map of Mughal gardens in the curve of her brow. The resistance of 1947 in the set of her jaw. The dance of a thousand harvests in the swing of her hips. Her skin—not “wheatish,” not “caramel,” but earth-after-rain .
