“Exactly,” Leo whispered, handing the woman at the folding table two wrinkled dollars. “That’s why I need it.”
Instead, he scrolled down. The directory was impossibly deep. There were folders he recognized: Nintendo 3DS/ , DCIM/ (his phone’s camera roll), Windows/System32/ (which made no sense on a 3DS). But then came the strange ones: ~/Memories/ , ../Neighbor’s_House/ , /Dreams/2024/ . On the right: a version of his bedroom
Inside were subfolders: Thoughts/ , Heart_Rate_History/ , Possible_Deaths/ , and one labeled ../Mia_Chen/ with a blinking padlock.
The 3DS screamed—a high-pitched electronic whine that made both of them clamp their hands over their ears. The right screen (the other Leo’s reality) snapped to black. The file deleted itself. The console went silent. The battery read 0%.
