The short answer is . Barbarian Villages are the best source of Ancient Maps , Pearls , and rare resources needed for future expansions. But attacking them blindly is a fast track to a floating graveyard.

After you kill the last Barbarian, you have 20 minutes of "Occupying" status. You must leave your units there.
