He stared at my hand for a long five seconds. Then he dropped the Key. It shattered into harmless pixels before it hit the sand. He dropped the foam sword, too. And then, very softly, he took my hand.

“Report,” I whispered into my wrist-comm.

I smiled. “Now, Captain, you learn the hardest pirate skill of all. Negotiation.”

The door to the simulation chamber hissed open. On the other side, not a raging sea or a cannon-blasted fortress, but a sandbox. A very large, very wet sandbox, stretching fifty yards in every direction under a perfect blue sky. In its center, a ship. LS-Land.issue.06.Little.Pirates.lsp-007

The other pirates paused. The girl with the pigtails—Maya, age four—looked uncertainly at her foam sword. “Leo? No more pudding?”

He raised his foam sword. The other children hesitated, then raised theirs. The air shimmered. The sky above the sandbox began to glitch—pixels of dark, empty code bleeding through the blue. He was actually doing it. He was pulling the Key to the Big Red Button into existence.

Maya raised her hand. “Can we negotiate for ice cream?” He stared at my hand for a long five seconds

He froze. The question wasn’t part of the game. The other pirates lowered their swords, confused.

My blood chilled. The Big Red Button. It wasn’t a real button. It was a metaphor—a dormant subroutine in LS-Land’s core code that, if activated by a sufficiently strong imaginative will, would reset the entire simulation to zero. All worlds, all progress, all memories. A blank slate.

“What now?” Leo asked.

A glowing, jagged shape materialized in his free hand. It hummed with the low, sad frequency of a deleted file.

The other pirates cheered. The simulation stabilized. LS-Land.issue.06 was resolved not with cannons or code, but with a handshake and the understanding that even little pirates just want a safe harbor.

I accessed my psych profile for lsp-007. Leo. Diagnosis: Advanced Tactical Imagination, borderline Reality Dissociation. His file had a single, underlined note from his previous therapist: He does not play games. He wages them. He dropped the foam sword, too

“What are your demands?” I asked.

Not a real ship. A playground ship. Red plastic slides for gangplanks, a twisted monkey-bar structure for the crow’s nest, and a rusty, round lid from a municipal water tank serving as the helm. Seven children, aged four to seven, stood upon it. They wore cardboard hats and eye patches made from electrical tape. They were screaming with joy.
