The phrase "Costurando Desenvolvimento" (Sewing Development) encapsulates the dual outcome: children create tangible objects while internally constructing patience, sequencing skills, and spatial awareness. 2.1 Montessori and Practical Life Maria Montessori emphasized “work that prepares the hand for the mind.” Sewing activities align with exercises of practical life : threading needles, knotting, and stitching refine the pincer grasp essential for writing. 2.2 Piagetian Constructivism Sewing projects require assimilation (following a pattern) and accommodation (adjusting stitches when fabric shifts). Children build logical-mathematical structures through measuring fabric, counting stitches, and symmetrically placing buttons. 2.3 Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) A complex project (e.g., a stuffed animal) is achievable with adult or peer scaffolding. The gradual release of responsibility—from tracing lines to independent sewing—mirrors ZPD principles. 3. (Sewing Projects for Children: Weaving Development, Creativity, and Motor Skills) Abstract This paper examines the pedagogical and developmental impacts of sewing projects tailored for children aged 6–12. Moving beyond traditional gender stereotypes, sewing is presented as a multidisciplinary activity that enhances fine motor skills, mathematical reasoning, emotional regulation, and sustainable design awareness. The paper proposes a structured framework for age-appropriate sewing projects and evaluates qualitative outcomes from pilot workshops in São Paulo and Lisbon.
