Rh Hacks -

Relative Humidity (RH) is the silent player in comfort, health, and yield. Whether you’re a home grower, a mushroom cultivator, or just trying to stop your guitars from warping, balancing RH can feel like a guessing game. These “RH hacks” will help you take control without breaking the bank. 1. The Towel Trick (Low-Tech Humidifier) Problem: RH is too low (below 30–40%). Hack: Hang a damp, clean bath towel over a hanger or clothes rack. Place a fan blowing across (not directly at) the towel. As water evaporates, RH rises. Re-wet every 6–12 hours. Why it works: Maximizes surface area for evaporation. Cheaper than a humidifier. 2. The Salt Calibration Check Problem: Your hygrometer readings seem off. Hack: Test its accuracy with table salt. Dampen (not soak) a small pile of salt in a bottle cap. Place cap + hygrometer in a sealed Ziploc bag for 24 hours. The bag should reach exactly 75% RH. Adjust your hygrometer accordingly. Why it works: Saturated salt solution creates a known, stable RH. 3. Rice to the Rescue (For Small Enclosures) Problem: RH too high in a guitar case, gun safe, or filament box. Hack: Put dry, uncooked rice in a breathable pouch (old sock or coffee filter + rubber band). Place inside the enclosure. Rice absorbs excess moisture like a desiccant. Pro tip: Microwave the rice pouch for 30 seconds every two weeks to “recharge” it. 4. The “Wet Blanket” for Fast Spikes Problem: Sudden drop in RH (e.g., heater turned on in winter). Hack: Drape a slightly damp blanket over a radiator or near the heat vent. As heat rises, it speeds evaporation, quickly boosting RH by 10–15%. Warning: Never cover electric heaters or block safety vents. 5. Ventilation First, Humidifier Second Problem: Stubborn high RH (above 70%) in a grow tent or basement. Hack: Before buying a dehumidifier, increase air exchange. Open a vent, run an exhaust fan, or add a circulating fan. Stagnant air traps moisture. Often, doubling airflow drops RH by 10–20% without added electricity. 6. The Terrarium Effect (For Seedlings & Clones) Problem: Needing 80–90% RH for clones or mushroom blocks. Hack: Use a clear plastic dome or even a cut 2-liter bottle over the plant. Mist the inside once, seal the edges with a bag or tape. Leave a pencil-sized air hole. The dome will self-regulate near 95% RH for days. Bonus: Add a wet paper towel inside the dome as a reservoir. 7. Defeat the “Night Spike” Problem: RH jumps 20% when lights go off (grow room issue). Hack: Run your exhaust fan on a timer for 5 minutes every hour during the dark period. Or, heat the space by 2–3°F just before lights off (warmer air holds more moisture, lowering RH). Key insight: RH is temperature-dependent. A small temp bump prevents condensation. 8. Use Houseplants as Humidistats Problem: You have no humidifier, but RH is chronically low. Hack: Cluster 3–5 broad-leaf houseplants (peace lily, ferns, spider plants) together. Water them normally. Their collective transpiration will raise local RH by 5–10%. Group them near your dry area (e.g., next to a bed or desk). Why: Plants release ~97% of water they take up back into the air. The Golden Rule of RH Hacks Never chase the number blindly. A steady RH (even if slightly off target) is better than wild swings. Sudden 20% RH changes stress plants, warp wood, and encourage mold. Small, slow adjustments win. Got a favorite RH hack? Share it — dry air and damp corners are universal battles.

Thanks for a great review Ilpo. It was interesting for me to see what you found useful in the Horizon bundle.

I bought some Waves plugins and liked them. But got upset by the WUP when I found out about it. I totally buy your argument about that the workers at Waves need to get payed. I think Waves undercommunicate what the WUP is.
I do love that Waves are supporting their old plugins and keep develop them! As a comparison I bought a plug-in from another company and a few months later that company disappeared from internet and newer came back!
So Waves are definitely a reliable partner if you like to build a long term professional buissenes.

Appreciate the thoughtful comment Erik. I agree they could do a better job at communicating what WUP is. I edited the article to include that thought. Thanks!

I appreciate your points as well Ilpo about maintaining stability in the company and paying employees fairly. I would prefer a different approach however. I have no issue paying an upgrade fee for new or improved features, or for Waves having to adapt their plugins to work in a new OS.
I don’t like paying an annual fee for no apparent changes or improvements however. I bought a bunch of Waves plugins on sale in 2020 and, when the 1 year purchase date occurred all these plugins stopped working in my DAW. I felt like I was being held hostage to have to renew licenses for no real benefit. Had I known this I probably wouldn’t have bought them.
I know there are lots of products that provide user access on a monthly or annual leasing arrangement. I have paid for upgrades for DAW improvements, added features in other products etc. on numerous occasions but I don’t want to pay an annual licensing fee for a product that I have already bought unless there is substantive improvement.

Thanks for sharing your experience David. I completely agree that is not how it should be.

You are aware that the WUP is not an annual licensing fee though, right? Something has obviously gone wrong for you there, because that is not how it’s supposed to work.

In which case you should contact Waves support.

You’re not forced to upgrade ever, unless your system specs have changed so that the version you own doesn’t work with your system anymore.

I was working quite happily with Waves V9 plugins for many years, until I decided to upgrade to V13.

So please do get in touch with Waves support, if your system specs haven’t changed there must be something wrong there, and I’m sure they’ll help you out with that.
