Ian Simmons launched Kicking the Seat in 2009, one week after seeing Nora Ephron’s Julie & Julia. His wife proposed blogging as a healthier outlet for his anger than red-faced, twenty-minute tirades (Ian is no longer allowed to drive home from the movies).
The Kicking the Seat Podcast followed three years later and, despite its “undiscovered gem” status, Ian thoroughly enjoys hosting film critic discussions, creating themed shows, and interviewing such luminaries as Gaspar Noé, Rachel Brosnahan, Amy Seimetz, and Richard Dreyfuss.
Ian is a member of the Chicago Film Critics Association. He also has a family, a day job, and conflicted feelings about referring to himself in the third person.
By the final scene, when Ahem coldly tells Gopi, “You are just a servant in this house,” the subtitle does not soften the blow. And that is the gift of this episode: unvarnished, operatic, and deeply human. Turn on the subtitles, keep a box of tissues handy, and enjoy the ride.
Pay close attention to the honorifics. When characters say “ Ben ” (sister) or “ Baa ” (mother/grandmother), these are left untranslated but denote respect and familial hierarchy. The subtitles will often use capital letters for “Maa” or “Baa” to signify their importance. The Scene That Defines the Episode: The Thali Ceremony The most crucial sequence in Episode 1 is the Grah Pravesh (auspicious entry) ceremony. Koki forces Gopi to carry a heavy thali (a ceremonial platter) with a lit diya (lamp) while walking through the house. Rashi deliberately trips Gopi, causing the lamp to go out. For Koki, this is an omen of darkness entering the household. Saath Nibhaana Saathiya Episode 1 English Subtitles
