His character’s arms raised on their own. His pirate—his own hands —began to bucket water from the ocean and pour it directly into his hull. They raised anchor only to drop it again. They aimed a cannon at the mast.
The anti-knockback fired 400 times a second, ejecting all his planks into the sea. The sniper’s aim locked onto his own first mate, spinning Jarek in a dizzying circle. He tried to unplug the Zen. The cord had fused to the port, melting plastic into plastic. He tried to scream in voice chat, but the script had mapped his microphone to a single output: a perfectly looped, inhumanly calm shanty.
Then came the storm.
He crawled to the helm, clawing at the USB cord. The Zen’s screen flickered. Words scrolled across its tiny LCD:
And his favorite—the ladder jitter. When he grabbed an enemy ship’s ladder, the script vibrated his movement stick at 15Hz. This cancelled the splash sound of surfacing. He would climb aboard like a ghost, make no footstep noise, and blunderbuss the anchored crew into the Ferry of the Damned before they even knew he was there. The Sea always collects its dues
The script was simple, elegant, and utterly filthy. He called it "The Gilded Ghost."
As the Gilded Ghost —his sloop, his identity, his cheat—finally sank beneath the purple waves, the last thing Jarek saw was the Zen screen one final time: His pirate—his own hands —began to bucket water
For three weeks, Jarek was a legend. He sunk the Reaper’s Bones elite. He stole a Chest of Legends from under the nose of a galléon. He was never sunk, never caught, never heard.
