Instead, it became a tense, paranoid thriller about persecution, moral compromise, and the desperate fight for survival. Unlike the grand, globe-trotting adventures of the X-Men films, The Gifted is intensely local. The setting is Atlanta, Georgia, but the tone is pure Eastern European noir—bleak, rainy, and claustrophobic. There are no yellow spandex, no psychic jets, and no Professor X in a wheelchair. The X-Men and the Brotherhood are mentioned only as ghosts; they vanished a year prior to the series’ start, leaving a power vacuum and a terrified mutant population at the mercy of Sentinel Services.
