The other applicants stared in disbelief. But Vanilla flew to Ichigo’s shoulder and nuzzled her cheek.

"Why can't I make something like this?" she whispered. After school, Ichigo trudged home, her failed cake in a sad little box. But on her doorstep lay a peculiar envelope—black, sealed with a silver wax emblem of a whisk crossed with a rolling pin.

"This cake," Vanilla whispered, "tastes like hope."

The judges approached. Salt sniffed and turned away. Caramel yawned. But Vanilla hovered closer. Yumeiro Patissiere Episode 1

But instead of following a recipe, she closed her eyes. She imagined a cake that tasted like a sunrise. Like the first day of spring. Like her grandmother’s strawberry jam.

She dashed downstairs, grabbed a piece of plain toast, and took a bite. Instantly, her eyes widened. "Mom! Did you add a pinch of honey to the dough this time?"

But Ichigo just stared, mesmerized. The little spirit named Vanilla—a wisp of a girl with hair like cream—zipped over and sniffed Ichigo’s hair. The other applicants stared in disbelief

The final cake emerged from the oven lopsided, burnt on one side, raw in the middle. The class laughed. Even the teacher winced.

Tears rolled down Ichigo’s cheeks. She hadn’t known she could make someone feel that way.

Henri continued: "Your test is simple. In two hours, create a cake that moves the spirit who chooses you. Only one will be admitted." Panic. The other applicants moved with practiced ease. The serious boy—Makoto—tempered chocolate like a scientist. The pigtailed girl—Kaori—whipped meringue into stiff peaks. The cold boy—Ryou—decorated with surgical precision.

Ichigo thought of her mother’s honey bread. The cream puff from Kosuke. The way her heart raced when she tasted something beautiful.

Henri Lucas smiled. "Ichigo Amano. You have no skill. No knowledge. No grace. But you have the rarest ingredient of all: a heart that understands sweetness. Welcome to St. Marie Academy."

Defeated, Ichigo sank to the floor. "I can't do this. I can't even bake a simple cake."

For the first time, Ichigo didn’t feel clumsy or lost. She felt like a girl standing at the edge of a delicious adventure.
